Thin Client

Well, ask how to?

Thin Client

I have a HP thin client running XPe.

I plan to use this in the kitchin as we have an LCD TV that also has VGA input and I can hide the client away.

I have considered / dabbled with two ways in doing this.

1. VNC on the client in full screen mode connecting to my main machine for EHDT and all things techie, which is running the Ehome client, works ok but the screen update over wireless is not the best, actually its tragic, not too bad over wired but means a bit of DIY to run in a cable. This machine is also connected to the Mini HiFi in the kitchen / dining room so Inet Radio and music can be run.

2. Took a flier on installing the EHDT on the client as it has the capacity to install on. Install failed with missing dll's and ocx's (if memory serves me well!) which I am putting down to XPe being a cut down version of windows.

I dont mind the VNC route (with discreet wireless mouse, the keyboard is hidden away and only used for times of trouble!) but wondered whether if anyone had thoughts on doing this?

Could there be a EHDT client that would run on XPe? without installing everything else.

I too have used VNC. Not good for video though. But check the net on how to tweak the performance. I do not remember where I found it, but a couple of tweaks made a HUGE difference.

XPe is a cut down version. The dev people use what is called a 'platform builder' and they pick what DLL;s to install or not.

If your thin client XPe has enough RAM or you can upgrade it, then thats what I wuld do and just run XPlite.
